Officer Irwin died as the result of an automobile accident that occurred while she was on her way to work at the Detention Center. For unknown reasons her car crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

She was survived by her daughter, Brittany Irwin and her son, Brett Irwin.
